Two peas in a pod: Finding friendship at La Rabida

Sometimes friendships can form in the most unlikely of places—just ask Georgia and Olivia; these two little girls and their loving moms became fast friends during their physical therapy appointments at La Rabida. Their mothers, Monique and Lynettra met in the waiting room last year; after discovering their daughters were very close in age and shared very similar conditions, the two struck up a conversation and became fast friends.

Since then, the two moms continue to schedule Olivia and Georgia’s physical therapy appointments around the same time, so the girls could spend time together. Monique and Lynettra have also built a strong bond with each other; in addition to the girls’ appointments, the two moms spend time outside La Rabida at HelloBaby, a play center for kids and their families on a regular basis.

After their appointments, Olivia and Georgia often spend a little quality time together with some side-by-side play at La Rabida’s rehab gym. The visible joy on their faces speaks for itself. Support for families is one of the most valued pillars of La Rabida’s mission; it's even more rewarding when families find that sense of community with each other.

LEGOLAND® supports La Rabida one brick at a time

La Rabida was selected by LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Chicago to be the beneficiary of their first-ever, 24-hour charity build. A LEGOLAND Master Model Builder visited La Rabida, and for 24 hours straight he worked on building a whimsical, large-scale structure entirely out of LEGOS. Master model builder, Greg Nuse was inspired by La Rabida’s nautical elements and its lakeside location, so he built a water-side sculpture complete with a towering lighthouse and sail boat to match the theme. It was estimated that the build would be comprised of 18,000 LEGO bricks; in the end, the final project grew to a whopping 30,000 bricks.

During the 24-hour timeline, several kids visiting for outpatient appointments and their families stopped by to watch the build. Nuse noted there were a number of inpatient kids who visited him 4-5 times throughout the day and the following morning to check on the build’s progress. Nuse stated he really enjoyed meeting with the kids and appreciated their curiosity and enthusiasm for the build.

Another guest joined the event’s festivities; LEGO mascot, Ninjago Kai stopped by to spend time with the kids and families during the build.

When asked about the organization’s first 24-hour build undertaking, master model builder, Greg Nuse stated, “Building for 24 hours is a daunting task, but I know it’s nothing compared to what La Rabida’s patients are going through…I [was] up for the challenge if I can bring joy to the lives of La Rabida’s patients and families.”

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago will be donating a smaller-scale version of the build, which will be on display at La Rabida Children’s Hospital. A big thank you to donors for their generous contributions to this project—all proceeds benefit the kids and families of La Rabida, and your donations make these unique and fun events possible!

White Sox blanket donations a home run for kids at La Rabida

Even though spring training is in full swing, White Sox fans know Chicago winter weather can linger well-into baseball season! That’s why we want to extend a special thank you to the Chicago White Sox for their generous, blanket donation.

Kids visiting our outpatient clinic and those staying aboard the SS La Rabida inpatient unit were treated to cozy blankets and vouchers for White Sox home game tickets. Thank you Chicago White Sox for your warm, kind donation!

In the Spirit of giving: La Rabida receives nearly $35,000 child life donation from Spirit of Children

La Rabida received a generous donation from the organization, Spirit of Children, a charitable affiliate of retailer, Spirit Halloween. Spirit of Children has a mission of making hospital stays “less scary for kids and their families.”

Spirit of Children contributed nearly $35,000 to La Rabida’s child life department. Our child life team supports the psychosocial and developmental needs of kids and families. Engagement with child life specialists offers the opportunity to let kids be kids during their stay at La Rabida Children’s Hospital.

Since forming the partnership in 2007, Spirit of Children has contributed well-over $200,000 to La Rabida. We are proud to partner with an organization like Spirit of Children that sees the value in enriching children’s lives through engaging play.
